The most revealing thing about a Hollywood film campaign may not be the trailer. It may be the argument that follows it.

Watch a major release closely in the weeks before it reaches cinemas and a pattern emerges. A headline appears. Social-media users react. Another publication picks up the story. Someone posts a video. Fans begin debating what it means. The studio releases another image, another clip, another interview. The conversation starts again.

The movie has not changed. The audience’s relationship to it has.

This is the modern film-marketing machine: not simply putting a film in front of people, but giving people reasons to talk about it.

Hollywood has become exceptionally good at this. Its marketing departments understand that visibility alone does not necessarily sell a cinema ticket. People can see an advertisement and forget it seconds later. A conversation is different. An argument can stay in someone’s mind. A mystery can make them search. A provocative headline can make them click. A surprising image can make them share.

Attention is the first sale. The ticket comes later.

I began thinking about this while watching the campaign surrounding Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey. Before the film’s release, the campaign appeared with remarkable regularity across Facebook, TikTok, Instagram and other digital platforms. It was not simply a trailer campaign. It felt like a continuing sequence of events, with new material constantly feeding the public conversation.

But there is another aspect of the campaign that deserves scrutiny: the title itself.

Calling the film The Odyssey does more than identify a story. It immediately invokes Homer. The name carries thousands of years of cultural recognition. Audiences already know that The Odyssey is one of the foundational works of Western literature. They recognize Odysseus. They recognize the journey. They recognize the mythology surrounding the poem.

That recognition has enormous value.

Had Nolan called the film merely inspired by Homer’s Odyssey, the relationship would have been different. Inspiration allows a filmmaker considerably more freedom. It tells the audience that the original work is a starting point, an influence, perhaps even a distant framework.

Adaptation is different.

Once a filmmaker calls a film The Odyssey, borrows Homer’s characters and mythology, and places the name of the ancient epic on the cinema marquee, comparison becomes inevitable.

The audience is entitled to ask: What was preserved? What was changed? What was removed? And why?

There is an important distinction here. This is not an argument that an adaptation must reproduce a literary work word for word. Great adaptations have always changed their sources. Cinema is not literature, and a filmmaker must translate one medium into another.

But there is a difference between adapting a work and simply using its cultural identity as a launching point for something substantially different.

If you invoke Homer’s Odyssey, then Homer’s world matters.

The gods, the prophecies, the monsters, the Magic and the supernatural encounters matter.

The strange and wonderful architecture of the poem matters.

These are not decorative extras added around an otherwise ordinary adventure story. They are part of what makes The Odyssey The Odyssey.

You are not adapting archaeology. You are adapting a literary work.

Whether the events described by Homer happened historically is beside the point. The poem itself is the source material. Its mythology, structure, characters and imaginative world are what have survived for thousands of years.

That makes the title particularly powerful.

The word Odyssey does marketing work before the audience has seen a single frame.

It communicates prestige, familiarity, scale and it tells an audience that what they are about to see belongs to a story they may already know.

And that brings us back to the larger question of modern Hollywood marketing.

The marketing department is not simply selling a movie. It is selling an expectation of what the movie will be.

A famous title can create that expectation instantly.

A headline can intensify it.

A photograph can reinforce it.

A trailer can exploit it.

Social media can turn it into an argument.

And the media can amplify the argument until the film becomes a cultural event.

This is why the most sophisticated campaigns understand that the audience does not have to agree with the marketing message. They simply have to engage with it.

Curiosity, excitement, nostalgia, mystery, controversy work. Even disagreement works.

A headline that makes people argue can travel farther than an advertisement that everyone agrees with. The argument becomes distribution. One person posts an opinion; another responds; a third person joins the discussion.

Soon, the film is being promoted by people who have never been paid to promote it.

Social media has made this phenomenon extraordinarily powerful.

Platforms such as TikTok, Instagram, Facebook and YouTube do not simply distribute advertising. They distribute reactions to advertising. The audience can become an extension of the campaign.

This is where artificial intelligence could change independent film marketing.

Much of the discussion about AI and filmmaking has focused on production: generating images, creating visual effects, editing footage or assisting with scripts and music.

But one of its most consequential applications may come after the film is finished.

AI can potentially help filmmakers create a much larger marketing operation from a much smaller team. A single film can be transformed into dozens or hundreds of promotional assets: trailers, short-form videos, character pieces, posters, interviews, social-media material, localized campaigns and advertising concepts.

More importantly, AI can make experimentation cheaper.

Instead of creating one advertisement and hoping it works, a filmmaker can develop several concepts and observe how audiences respond.

Which character attracts attention?

Which image generates discussion?

Which headline creates curiosity?

Which video keeps people watching?

Which subject creates disagreement?

Which message produces clicks?

The campaign can become iterative.

Create.Publish.Measure.Learn.Adapt.Repeat.

That is a very different model from the traditional independent-film campaign.

Hollywood has the resources to conduct these experiments at enormous scale. AI potentially allows independent filmmakers to conduct smaller versions of the same process without requiring a Hollywood-sized department.

The objective, however, should not be to manufacture empty controversy.

The audience is becoming increasingly sophisticated. If the headline promises one thing and the film delivers another, curiosity can turn into disappointment.

That is the danger.

The marketing may get the audience into the cinema once. The film itself determines what happens afterward. But the opportunity is enormous.

A filmmaker who previously could not afford a Hollywood-scale advertising campaign may now be able to create something approaching a Hollywood-scale marketing presence.

Not necessarily Hollywood’s budget. Not Hollywood’s publicity department. But its relentless presence.

Its ability to generate conversation, test ideas, put the film repeatedly in front of the right audience.

Its ability to turn a piece of content into a headline, a headline into an argument, an argument into curiosity, and curiosity into a ticket sale. That may be the real revolution in AI film marketing.

The future independent filmmaker may not need to spend like Hollywood.

They may need to learn how Hollywood thinks.

Find the emotional button.

Create the conversation.

Give people something to discuss.

Give the media something to report.

Give social media something to amplify.

And, above all, make sure that when audiences finally walk into the cinema, the film they were promised is the film they actually receive.

Because marketing can sell the ticket.

Only the movie can justify why the audience bought it.

It is a formula that has become so common that audiences can now see the mechanics behind it—and one of its most overused tactics is the suggestion of “romantic chemistry” between co-stars, whether real or exaggerated, as a way of keeping a film in the news.

At the heart of this strategy is the creation of buzz through personality-driven narratives. Studios understand that audiences are drawn to glamour, celebrity, and interpersonal dynamics more than they are to press releases about scripts or production details. By creating media storylines around cast relationships, playful flirtation, or “unexpected chemistry,” they shift attention away from the film itself and onto a side narrative that is easier to sell. The discussion becomes less about What is this movie about? and more about What is going on between these two people?

From a PR perspective, this works because gossip is cheap marketing. It creates headlines, social media clips, endless speculation, and free press coverage. Entertainment media thrives on personal narratives because they generate clicks faster than discussions about directing, writing, or cinematic craft. Instead of spending millions trying to convince audiences why a movie matters, studios can create a side story that keeps the title circulating in the public conversation.

But while this strategy may generate short-term buzz, it is increasingly becoming outdated. Audiences today are far more media-savvy than they once were. People recognize PR formulas. They know when interviews feel staged, when chemistry is exaggerated, and when promotional narratives seem engineered rather than authentic. What may once have felt glamorous now often feels manipulative.

This creates a bigger problem for Hollywood: a growing trust issue. When audiences feel they are being sold a fake narrative instead of a genuine movie experience, cynicism replaces excitement. People stop reacting with curiosity and begin reacting with skepticism. The spectacle starts to overshadow the product.

That may be why this strategy is no longer the best route for promoting films today.

Hollywood still operates on an old formula in which stars themselves are treated as the product. The assumption is that celebrity-driven narratives can create enough interest to carry a film through its release. But modern audiences have changed. Today, people ask different questions: Is the movie good? Is it original? Is it worth my time? Will people talk about it after I see it? Celebrity gossip alone is no longer enough.

The better strategy today is simple: sell the movie, not the side story.

Audiences respond to films that feel like events. They want to know why a story matters, what makes it unique, and what kind of experience it offers. A great trailer, a distinctive visual identity, a compelling concept, and genuine excitement around the creative work can build far more lasting anticipation than rumors or staged chemistry ever will.

Another smarter route is authenticity. Modern audiences connect with real moments far more than manufactured narratives. Funny unscripted interviews, genuine friendships between cast members, behind-the-scenes creative discussions, and honest enthusiasm from filmmakers travel further online because they feel real. Audiences reward authenticity because it creates trust.

Studios should also focus on community-building rather than gossip-building. Instead of trying to force headlines through celebrity narratives, they could engage audiences directly through:

Exclusive behind-the-scenes content

Fan theories and mystery campaigns

Interactive online experiences

Creator and influencer partnerships

Community screenings and early word-of-mouth reactions

These strategies create participation, not passive gossip.

One of the most effective modern approaches is making marketing an extension of the movie itself. Viral in-world campaigns, mystery websites, interactive storytelling, immersive events, and social media-native content can make audiences feel like they are entering the universe of the film rather than just watching celebrities promote it.

Studios should also understand the power of niche audiences. A genre film doesn’t need fake romance rumors to succeed if it builds excitement with the right communities first. Film podcasts, YouTube critics, TikTok creators, Reddit fan groups, and online fandoms often generate stronger organic momentum than tabloid headlines ever could.

Fake Romance A Film Marketing Strategy?

Perhaps most importantly, Hollywood needs to stop confusing attention with connection. Fake chemistry rumors may get people talking for a few days, but they rarely build lasting enthusiasm. A strong campaign creates something far more valuable than gossip, it creates trust, curiosity, and emotional investment.

That is the key difference.

Manufactured romance PR creates temporary noise. Authentic promotion creates anticipation.

Hollywood’s problem is not that its promotional strategies do not work they often do, at least in the short term. The problem is that they are increasingly repetitive, cynical, and disconnected from what modern audiences actually respond to.

Is Fake Romance an Ethical Film Marketing

The best route to promote films today is not through fake narratives about star relationships or carefully orchestrated tabloid bait. It is through great storytelling, authentic cast engagement, social media-native creativity, fan participation, and word-of-mouth momentum.

Because audiences may click on gossip.

But they buy tickets for something they genuinely believe is worth seeing.

Explore Maria Johnsen’s books
