Until the rise of streaming services, the pitching season for new series focused on the late spring and early summer of each year. And while companies such as Netflix are listening to pitches for new series the year round, 75% of all revenue from television series still comes from network and cable broadcasting companies. In fact, many popular shows on streaming services started out on cable or on broadcast networks.

Considering the number of television series produced by streaming services such as Amazon and Netflix, far more are being developed on the more traditional broadcast and cable platforms. Therefore, it makes little sense to ignore three-quarters of the market when pitching your television series. Getting your series off the ground requires access not only to contacts within streaming services, but to broadcast and network sources as well.

Hottest Trends in Scripted Television

The two trends that are currently rising above the rest in terms of interest from audiences are light dramas with plenty of humor and dramatic comedies. While the two seem to be the same on the surface, there are significant differences between the two trends. And today, many production companies are gearing their efforts towards creating such works as they are what most audiences want.

That does not mean other genres are off-limits, it’s just that the demand right now is for shows that provide a mixture of comedy and drama. We understand what network, cable, and streaming services are looking for in their programming. Our goal for our own TV series project is to maximize the chances of series is picked up while retaining its unique characteristics that make it special.

Reality Show Trends for 2021

Reality shows have advantages over scripted television when it comes to budgets, but more importantly they can be pitched the year-round. That’s because many broadcast and cable networks are looking for off-season replacement series with reality shows fitting the bill quite nicely.

However, the current trend of consolidation of reality shows to certain venues is causing some issues with pitching new series. Most notably, Discovery along with a few other notable channels are currently overloaded with reality programming. Add in the current situation with Warner Media and bringing in new reality shows for the next year or two will be difficult.

Future of Streaming Services

One of the most interesting trends is how many streaming services are taking on the characteristics of broadcast and cable networks. Add to this the rising trend of Advertiser- based Video on Demand or AVOD, and you have a place for advertisers to put their money.

While the trend of AVOD seems to run counter to what streaming services are all about, namely audiences avoiding having commercial interruptions, the truth is that such advertising helps build revenue for many streaming services.

In other words, now is the time for those who have both scripted and reality series at the ready to pitch them to broadcast, cable, and streaming networks.

Although the COVID-19 pandemic has altered the pitching season for networks and streaming services, there is more at work which may change the dynamics about the type of series that may be picked up. For those producing for the first time or working outside the Hollywood system, this may be your moment.

How COVID-19 Affected Upfronts

The annual network Upfronts was virtual this year because of the pandemic. This had a major effect on many advertisers who were only interested in making short term ad purchases. This meant instead of purchasing a show or series for a full season, it was only a quarterly purchase.

The effect on producers and writers in television was that the possibility for lower costs, shorter series became more available. Since networks fuel the industry with their ad purchases, buying on a quarterly basis as opposed to funding a full season means that more experimental work can get through. This means more risk-taking which opens the field to more producers and writers of creative programs.

In addition to networks going with short-term series, they benefit from this situation financially. This is because advertisement prices for Upfronts are 40%+ less compared to purchasing an ad during the show run. The result is that networks are more than happy to accept fewer buys Upfront and more for their traditional advertising during the run of their shows.

Effects on Network Programming

This effect has also caused the cancellation of some long-running series as they become more difficult to finance Upfront. There has even been a trend of renewing and then cancelling some series because of the money situation. Because lower-budgeted series, especially those with smaller orders are normally produced quickly, they have benefitted as a result of this situation.

The most obvious type of programming that has benefitted are reality shows. Because they have a considerably lower budget compared to traditional dramas and sit-coms, they are cheaper and easier to produce.

In addition, creators of new series have a leg-up in getting their shows into the schedule. This means a greater chance at producing a big hit. This has opened the door to more creative types of programs, although they will be limited in terms of budgeting.

Effects on Streaming Services

Since streaming services like Netflix do not rely on advertisers, the current environment is different compared to networks. While it is true that Hulu, Peacock, Amazon Studios, and even Disney+ have some connection to advertising revenue, all the streaming services will most likely mirror the behavior of their network counterparts.

This means for producers and writers looking to break into network or streaming services, the time could not be better. Plus, when the pandemic passes, it is likely that some networks or streaming services may revert to larger Upfront buys for certain programming. This means that when a series is established and successful, it may be around for a long time.

Going to an entertainment law firm that pitches series to networks and streaming services is a good first step. Be sure to have your lawyers available for any contracts, services, or advice needed to ensure everything is above board when you make your pitch.

Pitching a movie or a TV pilot to the big 6 in Hollywood is an art that requires skills, networking, solid background, good strategy, timing and above all a good film or TV idea. If you have connections in the film industry especially in Hollywood marketplace, you can have them market your script or even arrange a meeting with one of the executives. Without specialization and going through processes, it is improbable to achieve great things in movie business. A screenwriter, director and producer should give the pitching job to those who are specialized in pitching a film or script TV pilot to industry executives, but it costs money.

If you don’t have that much money, you can send your script to screenplay contests. You still have to pay for the entry to various good screenplay contests. There are a lot of scams out there. Do your research and find ones that are not scams.

Back to pitching: It doesn’t matter if you want to sell the script or get one of executives to co-produce the project with you. I hear or read some guys brag about pitching to Netflix. It’s not easy to get the foot in the door. Pitching to Netflix is hard, unless you’re one of the Hollywood executives. Don’t believe whatever some newcomers say. There are a lot of good scripts out there, why would they want to read your script? Who are you? You have to have something of value attached to the script like an A list actor, an A list director or an A list cinematographer. If you don’t have any of them, it is hard to sell.

You can certainly choose the more difficult path, like one of the producers I know who made her film with $800K budget and sold it to Sony for $5 million. But not all of us have money to make the film. Film institutes and private film funding companies never support an indie filmmaker, although their motto is to support us, but at the end of the day the major film production companies get the turkey. You have to make several movies with track record of sales, and only then they maybe want to read your one page pitch.

We all hate writing pitch because they are hard to write and considered not creative in the same way as writing our screenplays.

Pitching an idea is hard. Because every executive producer has a different taste, if you pitch personally you have to have enough practice to hook them from the start. If you send them a written pitch, good luck with that.

In the film industry, if you specialize in writing screenplays, you need a pitching specialist. Hollywood is a too competitive marketplace and based on my experience, film productions in Europe and the other countries look at what is trend in Hollywood. So if your pitch pleases some of the executives in one of the Big 6, you can be sure your idea or screenplay will please distributors around the world as well and you get more pre-sales distribution agreement.

How to pitch your movie to Hollywood? To be honest, it costs you money, time and effort. The best advice I can give you is to hire a trustworthy specialist to get your pitch through executives. I recommend registering your idea first and getting copyright for it. When it comes to pitching, it is better to choose a company than a person. If you choose a company, their pricing will be too competitive. You can also hire pitching services that are right for you.

Can A Good Pitch Guarantee Success?

No. To be honest with you, a good pitch doesn’t necessarily prove that your script is good, but it has a better chance of being sold. The difference between the two is that nobody (not even the top studio executives) knows whether a movie is going to be a hit even if you attach an A list actor or actress in Hollywood.

A bad pitch doesn’t mean a script is bad either. This is why many executive producers make mistake and decline bad pitches. It is better to give them the script, but very few would read the script.
